| Dubai Harmony - Uniting Women of the World in Love for Singing |
| by Patricia Saldanha, for Daijiworld News Network Dubai, Nov 28: Dubai Harmony Chorus (DHC) is a group of multi-national women who sing four-part harmony in the barbershop style. They share a common bond - the love of music and the challenge of striving for excellence It is a highly visible, innovative and exciting performing chorus committed to musical excellence while promoting barbershop harmony, friendship, education, self-esteem and a sense of belonging among women of all ages, races, creeds or ethnicities. What is barbershop harmony? In simple terms, it is unaccompanied vocal harmony produced by four voices called lead, tenor, baritone and bass. It is like taking any song and rewriting it to remove the instrumental accompaniments and add accompanying voices to it. As the singers need no musical accompaniments, no sound systems or any other sophisticated instruments, the group is quite flexible and can perform almost anywhere - as long as there is a place to stand. The DHC provides its members an opportunity to make new friends who look forward to weekly rehearsals all the year round.
The group has performed a number of times all around Dubai at Christmas and at other private and public occasions. Talking about the group that is constantly changing and evolving, and are continually striving to be more modern with a strong melody line. In May 1993, women who were looking to enrich their lives with music began to attend Tuesday night gatherings at the Dubai Arts Centre under the leadership of Lyn Jacquemot. Her 23 year membership in Sweet Adelines International gave her the love & knowledge of Barbershop singing which she wanted to pass on to others Lyn posted flyers around town and wanted to do something with her 23-year experience in singing, four women turned up at the DIAC to sing. Today, we are a 45 member harmony chorus with women from 15 different nationalities. "With members joining and leaving, we have had a
turnover of about 180 members. Our oldest member once was an 82- year old and our youngest member has been a 15-year old. While we have no age preferences for joining members, a mature voice and commitment is what we really look for." Every season new members are allowed to audition for the first 3 weeks of the season. It isnt necessary to be able to read music. A simple singing of Happy Birthday will tell you which part your voice is suited for. But the prime aim is to have fun! Rehearsals are held every Tuesday at the Jumeirah Primary School Hall at 7:30pm Says Rahul, a young college student who was on a vacation to Dubai and got an opportunity to attend this concert last year at the Jumeirah International Hotel Being a music lover, I wanted to see what this barbershop music was all about. And believe me I was simply dumbstruck to hear this kind of music for the first time in my life. It was simply amazing to hear the voices blend in harmony so much so
that even when I went home, the tunes were still ringing in my ear. Another well known socialite and President of the Kanara Businessmen's Forum Mr. Jerome Saldanha of Modern Graphics, Sharjah who initially was in two minds of attending the show was extremely over whelmed with the performance which he attended with his wife. He is so keen to have a DVD of the presentation to view it over and over again. Nita Brinkhorst is our newly elected President. We ladies are united by a love of singing and inspired by our musical director Gayle Powell. We sing unaccompanied, and off the paper in four-part harmony Barbershop style. Our dance routines choreographed by Freda Hart really compliment the songs that we perform. Quite a few Indians and especially Mangaloreans and Goans like Rose Saldanha, Divina Moraes, Rowena Miranda, Reema Pereira, myself and Carol Machado who is also the Treasurer are part of this group. Haul out the Holly .with Dubai Harmony this Christmas season. Its our favourite time of year at Dubai Harmony this is when we sing for pleasure around Dubai, and bring a little festive sparkle into everyones busy lives. This years theme is Haul out the Holly and there will be two concerts in December 2005 at : Holy Trinity Church on Wednesday 7 December, 2005 and Christ Church Jebel Ali on Tuesday 13 December, 2005. Along with the chorus our accomplished quartets lend a more intimate sound and our Christmas programme this season comprises a variety of seasonal songs for young and old from any culture; everybodys favourite seasonal songs. From the magical Let it Snow, Winter Wonderland, Christmas Chopsticks and Need a Little Christmas to the more traditional Marys Boy Child, Carol of the Bells, Coventry Carol, Angels We Have Heard On High Ode to Joy and our own particular favourite, Go Tell It On The Mountain there is something to bring festive joy to everyone at this special time of year.
