I am a bit confused by the description.

1) It says it works like a riposte (but not resticted to a certain
defence) and thus it gives the opponents active defence a malus
based on how well the defence has worked out.

2) It also works if the defence failed.

3) A contest is made whos attack goes first.

1) and 2) are easily compatible, as is 2) and 3) (in which case it would
be like a stop hit only that both fighters are allowed an active defence)
and full pain penalities apply and it uses up the next attack of the
defender.

But how to mix 1) and 3)?

If the defender wins the contest and goes first,
does his defence, that has not happened yet and propably will not be
needed anyway if his attack goes through, give penalities to the attackers
defence? Or are there no penalities if the defender wins the contest, in
which case very often the defender will want to loose that contest.

Or will the contest only happen if the defence fails? In that case what
if for some tactical consideration the defender preferes the contest.
(i don't know a tactical consideration that makes sense on top of my head,
but that does not mean some player could come up with something, making
sense or not)
