Soliciting opinions on a ruling regarding Delay spell:
A mage wants to cast Explosive Fireball with the Delay spell linked to it
on a small amount of clay. The conditions of the Delay spell are that a
dolphin (either via Create Animal or Control Mammals) swims the clay to an
oncoming ship some distance away, leaps, attaches it to the (wooden) hull
just above the waterline and swims away. The explosive fireball detonates
five seconds after attachment.
The Link spell denotes an area of detection, implying that the spell
cannot be moved. The Delay spell only talks about a certain duration and
set of conditions being met-- but technically, this enhances the effective
range of the Explosive Fireball to as far as a fast fish can swim (or bird
can fly if one projects this to other settings) in the time duration of
the Delay spell.
You can't Delay or Link Missile spells, only Regular or Area spells.
If I were GM, I'd say that "in the area around this lump of clay" would be
legit.
For this application, I'd Rive the hull, followed by a Create Fire (or
Essential Fire)
Re-reading the 4e description of Rive, it apparently has no limit on amount
of damage! It says "1 per die of damage to be inflicted to the object"
