Because just because the formula produces usable numbers doesn't mean those numbers bear significant relationship to reality. Basic aerodynamic formulas aren't that hard, but it sounds like autogyros operate in the speed range where conventional fixed-wing formulas break down, and the equations used there (and also used for helicopters and flapping wings) are fairly impractical without a computer.
