I've not read the relevant sections, but I'd imagine that the plates, once
added, only protect very specific locations, and fail to protect 100%
throughout the remaineder of locations involved.  In short, if frontal and
rear plates were added, it wouldn't protect against incoming side attacks.
I'd have to dig up the book to see if this were the case or not.
