Caravel or Schooner? For tech level 2, the rules allow two masts (VE9) and the choice of simple square sails, lugsails, and lateen sails (VXi9). On paper, the only difference between lugsails and lateen sails are 5° Minimum Upwind Angle more or less.
A pair of lateen sails would constitute a caravel, a caravela latina rather than a caravela redonda, like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:PotugueseCaravel.jpg A pair of lugsails, without jibs, might be a schooner roughly like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Smallschooner.jpg Historically, the caravel came earlier than the schooner, but is it also easier to build? Can there be cramped rowing stations? I thought of adding oars, which is both in character for a TL2 ship and also used in much later sailing craft, like Captain Kidd's Adventure Galley (at least according to the Osprey book on pirate ships). I don't want to spend much weight/volume on those oars, but are cramped seats possible for rowers? _______________________________________________ GurpsNet-L mailing list <[email protected]> http://mail.sjgames.com/mailman/listinfo/gurpsnet-l
