Consider using the Greco-Roman design principle - abutting planks joined by 
rows of dowels and strengthened by an internal skeleton added afterwards. It's 
not a terribly economical way of doing things (which is presumably why it was 
abandoned), but it's crazy strong and extremely durable. If you have some kind 
of deep-pocketed backer for the exploration project, the labour requirements 
for making the ships needn't worry you.
