Light Atmospheric Fighter v1.0 (TL9)
   Copyright 2010 by Onno Meyer

The Light Atmospheric Fighter could be a cutting edge design in a near
future or cyberpunk game, or part of an obsolescent frontier force in an
interstellar game.
In a clean configuration, the jet fighter can reach Mach 1.3. Cruising
at subsonic speeds, it has a strike range of over 1,000 miles. The Light
Fighter has an electrothermal gatling and a bay for 2.4 tons of internal
ordnance, plus hardpoints for 5 tons of external stores. Many corporate
armies use smart bombs to limit collateral damage, while regular forces
can use less discriminate weapons, at least on backwater planets where
the galactic press isn't looking.

Speaking of sci-fi games...

There was a sci-fi novel I read where atmospheric fighters were dropped from space. They used a disposable heat shield and they were VTOL for landing on unprepared ground. They were used because they were a lot more maneuverable than a ground-space shuttle.

Can Vehicles do a disposable reentry shield for a fighter like this one? I'll have to look later.
