Who is to say that Sauron is not some sort of ultra-tech AI? The rings would be control mechanisms for nanobots. Could not a swarm of nanites provide a combination of wave-guides and coloration changes to provide invisibility to normal wavelengths(but also allow vision on some near-by set of wavelengths where the effects of that cloaking are not significant)?
If such effects are powered primarily by the blood-sugar of the user, that would even explain the wasting effects. The control mechanism would be even easier, just microsurgery and direct stimulation of neurons.(mostly to 'train' the wearer, but they could also provide direct control when needed) Any other effects of the rings that could not be explained by a well directed nano-swarm?
