Why would not the traditional wizard robe colors be a hold-over from
the uniforms used by two different philosophies pursued by the
ancients?
Sort of like the Vorlons and the Shadows from B5 but with a third
'balance' or 'undecided' group. You have the 'strength through
conflict' and the 'strength through cooperation' schools, and anyone
chooses one of those paths for acquiring access to the ancients
technology(probably some long-life wireless power-sources buried
around the planet to power each of the three 'factions').

The Ancients just up and vanished while this whole thing was being
hashed out, leaving their foot-soldiers fighting a war that has become
without meaning just because that is what they were designed to do.
(intelligent non-humans could all of course be manufactured races)

This would have no real impact on what happened in the books, just on
some of the forgotten background thereof.

All persons possessing any portion of power ought to be strongly and
awfully impressed with an idea that they act in trust and that they
are to account for their conduct in that trust to the one great
Master, Author, and Founder of society.
