ME magic would be way above what can be done with Traveller Imperium technology (and thus also above what the Villani could do). It could be Ancients-Technology. You'd need some explaination, why just certain technology survived, and it will not be trivial to get one that can suspend disbelieve.
Propably more important ME background has something like an alignment system (for instance see the changing of the colors of robes of magicans), while Traveller has not. Either you have to hack alignments into Traveller, or you need to declare ME alignments as not what they apreare to be. Either way you butcher one setting.
