An other idea i have developed with some friends a while ago, that could be used for ensuring genetic diversity, though we had thought about isolated mounntain villages in fantasy settings at that time.
Parents have to exchnage their kids for ones from a different valley/ship/.. . A priesthood acts as clearinghouse for for child transfers.
