Hello Nils,

that is a solution for external storage, but I don't think it
helps with the "girder hull" concept -- if the cargo is in an
external cradle, what is in the body? I'd need an internal
external cradle, which is a contradiction in terms ...

What I have in mind are ships which could never operate in an
atmosphere, and which show it.

One option are solar cells. A TL10+ starship with large solar
cells is difficult to explain, but I think I can do it.

Another option are unstreamlined vehicles with multiple
subassemblies.

And then there are 'sleek' ships which are nevertheless
unable to operate in an atmosphere, because their hull is
just to irregular. That's what I had in mind.

Space:1999 would be a nice fit, too, except that they're
taking those ships into atmosphere all the time ...

I'm thinking of the Space:1999 Eagle or the ISS truss section.
Possibly large enough to squirm through, without the backpack
of the space suit, but also big enough to hold a shipping crate.
