My understanding of the purpose of land mines is that they are used to channel
ground troops onto particular pathes or to slow down their approach.

Therefore I was told that mine fields always have to be marked with yellow
ribbon and signs "Danger! Mine Field!".

On my comment that this would warn the enemy and would render the mine field
useless, I got the response: "We will always have yellow ribbon and warning
signs, but if we will have always enough mines can be doubted. And it does not
matter if there are really hundreds of mines, or none, the field has to be
searched thoroughly - and it takes longest to find mines that are not there. So
it will slow them down or they have to go another way." - Mission accomplished …

I also understand that land mines are sometimes used as means to terrorize the
civilian population, and that some doctrines take them as part of the defense
of a location. For the latter purpose I would think that automated guns would
be the better option.

Es heißt, der Klügere gibt nach. Doch wenn die Klügeren immer nachgeben, dann
passiert nur noch, was die Dummen wollen …

Of course it has a meaning when a black cat crosses your way from left to right
…
It means, that the cat, coming from your left, wants to go somewhere right from
you ...
