Dear GURPSnet, earlier I had asked some questions regarding science fiction combat engineers. I have half a dozen TL13 vehicles: a crane, earthmovers, an utility vehicle. Coming soon to a mailing list near you.
I have no good answer for mining and demining, except to use cyberswarm hives on an utility vehicle. The mine question is related to assumptions about TL13 infantry: * I'm assuming that people and not robots fight, mostly for game balance reasons. People will need some serious suits. I'm assuming 1,000 lbs. loaded weight. Less it too weak, more is too bulky. * Battlesuits with integral guns or powered armor with large handheld rifles? Barrel length is an issue -- how long can a forearm mount or shoulder mount get? * I can get a $120k suit with DR 500 or a $250k suit with DR 750 and slightly better stealth. (That had been my estimate some weeks ago. Having TL12 examples helped.) That would mean something like 6d*7(10) HEAT or 6d*7(5) APSHD for an anti-personnel weapon. A 50mm normal HEAT warhead (1 lb.) will do the job. Considering that power armor can carry higher loads, not too bad. * A 6mm long grav gun would do the job, but the suggested barrel length is 5 feet. Ignore that guideline? * The suit has size modifier +0, and stealth and emission cloaking -13. On the other hand, mounting more than a scan 15 PESA in the turret really pushes things. The effective detection range will be too close for comfort unless it gets a high-end Electronics Operation (Sensor) program. Of course then the suit rolls and not the PC. A C7 neural net has has IQ 11 and runs a 24-point skill program. Since it is a mental skill, that is quadrupled for skill 48 or thereabouts. Of course there is a rule that robot skill programs can't exceed the skill of the programmer, but that programmer could be another neural net -- unless I arbitrarily ban that from the setting. Do you have any corrections, comments, or suggestions?
