Hello Mike,

a tricky question, because several angles get into this ...

1) Which stories do I like?

Banks' Culture. Pournelle's CoDominion. Cherryh's Alliance/Union.
Brin's Uplift and Bujold's Barrayar, both already done. Hamilton's
Greg Mandel. Star Trek DSN. Weber's Honor Harrington and Safehold.
Robinson's Mars trilogy.

2) Which worlds do I like?

As above, plus Hamilton's Night's Dawn (great setting, the story
is mediocre). Niven's Known Space. Star Wars.

3) Which worlds would I like to play as a setting for my favourite
   RPG?

How do I handle the Minds of the Culture? Distant, ineffable gods?
Not quite right, they meddle a lot. PC Minds with their own 80-km
starships?

In the Honorverse, tech races and the surprises they bring play a
big role. A TL11^-and-a-little-bit dreadnought will slaughter a
merely TL11^ fleet. Games might work in the early, static-tech
era, but not later.

Do I really want a writeup of the economies of the Hinder Stars,
and how they were affected by the Mazianni raids? Do I _want_ to
know what happened after Tripoint? I wait for the novel, not the
RPG supplement.

4) Are we talking about replaying the stories, or playing in the
   world of those stories?

The Serenity RPG made a couple of mistakes in this regard. One
great season, way too short, just didn't have the material to
fill a world.

5) What would happen to GURPS if SJG made the investment in
license fees and time to make happen?

Is it public knowledge how the Discworld books turned out? Of
course that was a different era. ISTR that the Vorkosigan book
was a lot of trouble.

Regards,
Onno
