This is a weekly posting with GURPS vehicles (and the like) to the
GURPSnet mailing list. I grant the permission for all non-commercial
redistribution of my work, but I would like to know if you put it on
a website or the like. The files at omeyer.gmxhome.de are down until
I fix the automatic PDF generation, which should be one of these
days - see sourceforge.net/projects/gurpsml

Steam Line of Battle Ship v1.0 (TL5)
  Copyright 2015 by Onno Meyer

Even a small steam engine improves the tactical and strategic mobility
of a line of battle ship. She can steam into the wind, and her hull form
can be optimized to sail with the wind instead.
Most of the required technologies were available during the Napoleonic
Wars, but historically it took some time to bring them all together. The
key innovation was the screw propeller, which put the engines below the
water line and kept the gun decks free for a heavy broadside. The third
rate mounts 32-pounders on the lower gun deck, 18-pounders on the upper
gun deck, and 9-pounders on the quarterdeck and forecastle -- her bow
lines leave no room for extra carronades.
The steam battleship is unlikely to appear at faraway naval stations.
If she does, excitement and adventure are sure to follow. Heroes might
be sent to cut her out, or to protect her against such mischief.
The steam engine burns 0.75 tons of coal per hour. The usual load of
coal, food, and ammunition is $493,848.
