This is a weekly posting with GURPS vehicles (and the like) to the GURPSnet mailing list. I grant the permission for all non-commercial redistribution of my work, but I would like to know if you put it on a website or the like. The files at omeyer.gmxhome.de are down until I fix the automatic PDF generation, which should be one of these days - see sourceforge.net/projects/gurpsml Onno Meyer, 2015-09-21
GSbAG Continental-class Express Train v1.0 (GURPS Traveller TL6) Copyright 2015 by Onno Meyer GSbAG uses steam railways on some underdeveloped planets. They can be maintained using local ressources, a cost-saving measure which can make the business case for a new mine viable where imported grav technology would run at a loss. The Continental generally tows six passenger cars at 60 to 100 mph. Express Engine The Continental-class Engine consists of two parts, the engine herself and the attached coal tender. The engine has sixteen wheels in the 4-8-4 configuration, with 1500mm driver wheels powered by a steam turbine. The tender contains 48 tons of coal and the feedwater condensers. The engine has a pilot plow, also known as a poni catcher, and a 3-kW searchlight in front. On especially difficult sections of track, one of the crew could go to an observer position on the running board with an intercom connection to the engineer. The cab has room for the engineer, two stokers, the conductor, and a full backup crew. The tender is fitted with a small crane to help loading coal if local facilities are insufficient. The steam turbine burns 4 tons of coal per hour at routine use. A full load is $1,920. Subassemblies: Body +7, 24 Railway Wheels +3, full-traverse Open Mount +1. Powertrain: 3,920-kW wheeled drivetrain; 4,000-kW steam turbine; 4,800-kWs lead-acid battery. Fuel: 1,920 cf coal bunker. Occ: 2 RCS, 3 RSR, 4 bunks. Cargo: 120 cf. Open Mount: 0.5-ton crane. External: Plow; 667 sf top deck; two tow hitches. Statistics Size: 150'x11'x15' Payload: 100,000 lbs. Lwt.: 400,000 lbs. Volume: 20,000 cf Maint.: 32 hours Price: $403,145 HT: 12. HPs: 24,000 Body, 1,000 each Wheel, 100 Open Mount. gSpeed: 100 gAccel: 3 gDecel: 10 gMR: 0.125 gSR: 6 Ground Pressure Very High. No Off-Road Speed. Design Notes Performance was calculated with 300 tons of towed weight, representing the rest of the typical Express Train configuration. Body is 15,982 cf, articulated, with good streamlining. Wheels are 4,000 cf (increased volume). Open Mount is 18 cf. Structure is cheap, extra-heavy. Armor is cheap metal. Mechanical controls. 2,541.73 cf of empty space. Empty weight is 300,000 lbs. Express Car The Express Car has eight passenger compartments, each with six seats and a folding table. Small luggage can be stored in overhead racks, big suitcases goes into the cubicle of the porter. A small hatch leads to a walkway on the roof, but using it is impractical at high speed. The car has electric lights, heaters, and fans. The battery lasts for half an hour if the Express Car is disconnected from the engine. Subassemblies: Body +6, eight Railway Wheels +3. Powertrain: 24,000-kWs lead-acid battery. Occ: 48 RS with superior access, 1 NS, 1 folding CS. Cargo: 500 cf. HPs: 7,500 Body, 750 each Wheel. gSpeed: * gAccel: * gDecel: * gMR: * gSR: * Ground Pressure High. No Off-Road Speed. * Use towing vehicle's statistics after adding towed weight. Design Notes Body is 8,000 cf, with good streamlining. Wheels are 2,000 cf (increased volume). Structure is cheap, heavy. Armor is cheap metal. 2,161.39 cf of empty space. Empty weight is 80,000 lbs. Both vehicles uses the design rules from Vehicles [second edition, third printing, July 2010 errata], VXi, and VXii (including the armor volume rule) with the text format from Vehicles Lite. The Traveller rules affect the background and design choices, but not the technology of this vehicle. Next Week: A sleeper train. _______________________________________________ GurpsNet-L mailing list <[email protected]> http://mail.sjgames.com/mailman/listinfo/gurpsnet-l
