This is a weekly posting with GURPS vehicles (and the like) to the GURPSnet mailing list. I grant the permission for all non-commercial redistribution of my work, but I would like to know if you put it on a website or the like. The files at omeyer.gmxhome.de are down until I fix the automatic PDF generation, which should be one of these days - see sourceforge.net/projects/gurpsml Onno Meyer, 2015-09-28
GSbAG Global-class Sleeper Train v1.0 (GURPS Traveller TL6) Copyright 2015 by Onno Meyer GSbAG uses steam railways on some underdeveloped planets. They can be maintained using local ressources, a cost-saving measure which can make the business case for a new mine viable where imported grav technology would run at a loss. The Global often pulls very fast passenger trains between the starport and the mines in the hinterlands. Sleeper Engine The Global-class Engine is powered by two steam turbines. The driving wheels are mounted on separate bogies, with two leading wheels in front and six trailing wheels in the rear, a 2-8-8-6 configuration. The coal tender is permanently attached to the engine -- it includes condensers for the turbine feedwater. Together the engine and the tender are over 90m long and heavier than a Free Trader. The crew consists of the engineer, the assistant engineer, and three stokers. Visibility from the cab is restricted, so there is an observer position with an intercom and a powerful headlight on the running board just behind the pilot plow. The turbines burn 18 tons of coal per hour at routine use. The travel speed with ten Sleeper Cars is 75 mph. A full load of coal is $7,680. Subassemblies: Body +8, 32 Railway Wheels +4. Powertrain: 17,500-kW wheeled drivetrain; two 9,000-kW steam turbines; 3,600-kWs lead-acid battery. Fuel: 7,680 cf coal bunker. Occ: 1 RCS, 4 RSR, 1 XRSR. Cargo: 750 cf. Design Notes Performance was calculated with 800 tons of towed weight, representing the rest of the typical Sleeper Train configuration. Body is 40,000 cf, articulated, with good streamlining. Wheels are 10,000 cf (increased volume). Structure is standard, extra-heavy. Armor is standard metal. Mechanical controls. 552 cf of empty space. Empty weight is 800,000 lbs. Sleeper Car The Sleeper Car has eighteen passenger cabins with two beds each. The shared bathrooms are at the ends of the corridor. The staff has a small compartment with fold-down bunks and their own sanitary facilities. The car has electric lights, heaters, and fans. The battery lasts for 128 minutes if the Sleeper Car is disconnected from the engine. Subassemblies: Body +7, eight Railway Wheels +4. Powertrain: 76,800-kWs lead-acid battery. Occ: 18 double-occupancy cabins, 4 RS folding into bunks. Cargo: 600 cf. Design Notes Body is 12,000 cf, with good streamlining, articulated. Wheels are 3,000 cf (increased volume). Structure is standard, heavy. Armor is standard metal. 142.4 cf of empty space. Empty weight is 140,000 lbs. Both vehicles uses the design rules from Vehicles [second edition, third printing, July 2010 errata], VXi, and VXii (including the armor volume rule) with the text format from Vehicles Lite. The Traveller rules affect the background and design choices, but not the technology of this vehicle. Next Week: A little diesel engine. _______________________________________________ GurpsNet-L mailing list <[email protected]> http://mail.sjgames.com/mailman/listinfo/gurpsnet-l
