This is a weekly posting with GURPS vehicles (and the like) to the
GURPSnet mailing list. I grant the permission for all non-commercial
redistribution of my work, but I would like to know if you put it on
a website or the like. The files at omeyer.gmxhome.de are down until
I fix the automatic PDF generation, which should be one of these
days - see sourceforge.net/projects/gurpsml

General Products 40C4.8-class Switcher Engine and Crane v1.0 (GURPS Traveller TL7)
  Copyright 2015 by Onno Meyer

Railways are easier to maintain than grav flyers, and most earthlike
planets have at least some hydrocarbon fuels. This leads to technology
like the 40C4.8-class, a switcher locomotive for use on marshalling
yards and starports.

Switcher Engine

  The 40C4.8 is a compact diesel-hydraulic engine. The twelve-cylinder
diesel is mounted in front, the hydraulic transmission is placed under
the cab, and the fuel tanks and auxiliary systems are in the rear. The
40C4.8 has remote radio control for one-man switching operations, and
mirrored consoles in the cab for forward and reverse operations.
The engine burns 21 gallons per hour at routine speed. A full tank of
diesel is $720.

Subassemblies: Body +5, six Railway Wheels +3.
Powertrain: 600-kW rugged all-wheel drivetrain; 600-kW rugged marine
  diesel engine; 800-kWs lead-acid battery.
Fuel: 600 gallons diesel (fire on 9).
Occ: 2 bridge CCS.

Armor F RL B T U
Body: 4/20 4/20 4/20 4/20 4/20
Wheels: 4/20 4/20 4/20 4/20 4/20

Equipment:
Body: Whistle; two intercom stations; two medium-range radios; two
transponders; two 2-man airlocks; 2-man NBC-kit. External: 267 sf top
deck; two tow hitches.

Statistics
Size: 30'x11'x12' Payload: 4,000 lbs. Lwt.: 80,000 lbs.
Volume: 2,400 cf Maint.: 40 hours Price: $253,272

HT: 12. HPs: 4,800 Body, 1,600 each Wheel.

gSpeed: 55 gAccel: 1 gDecel: 10 gMR: 0.5 gSR: 4
Ground Pressure High. No Off-Road Speed.

Design Notes
Performance was calculated with 150 tons of towed weight. Body is
1,200 cf, with heavy compartmentalization. Wheels are 1,200 cf
(increased volume). Structure is very cheap, extra-heavy. Armor is cheap
metal. Sealed. Mechanical controls with duplicate maneuver controls and
radio remote controls. 254.24 cf of empty space. Empty weight is 76,000
lbs.

150-ton Rail Crane

The railway crane is useful where tracks can be found, not least for
salvage and repair in case of rail accidents. With deployed outriggers,
it can lift 150 tons and telescope out to 450'.
The engine burns 5.25 gallons of diesel per hour. A full tank is $60.

Subassemblies: Body +6, four retractable Skids +2, twelve Railway Wheels
  +3, full-rotation Turret +6.
Powertrain: 150-kW standard diesel engine; 2,000-kWs lead-acid battery.
Fuel: 50 gallons diesel (fire on 10).
Occ: 1 RCS.

Armor F RL B T U
Body: 3/12 3/12 3/12 3/12 3/12
Skids: 3/12 3/12 3/12 3/12 3/12
Wheels: 3/12 3/12 3/12 3/12 3/12
Turret: 3/12 3/12 3/12 3/12

Equipment:
Turret: 150-ton crane; 1-man NBC kit. External: Two tow hitches.

Statistics
Size: 100'x11'x16' Payload: 500 lbs. Lwt.: 300,300 lbs.
Volume: 9,600 cf Maint.: 19 hours Price: $1,069,210

HT: 11. HPs: 9,000 Body, 300 each Skid, 1,500 each Wheel, 9,000 Turret

gSpeed: * gAccel: * gDecel: * gMR: * gSR: *
Ground Pressure Very High. No Off-Road Speed.
* Use towing vehicle's statistics after adding towed weight.

Design Notes
Body is 3,200 cf, articulated. Skids are 160 cf, retract into Body.
Wheels are 3,200 cf (increased volume). Turret is 3,200 cf. Structure is
very cheap, extra-heavy. Armor is cheap metal. Sealed. Light tanks.
2,038.93 cf of empty space in the Body, 75.8 cf in the Turret. Empty
weight is 299,800 lbs.
Both vehicles uses the design rules from Vehicles [second edition,
third printing, July 2010 errata], VXi, and VXii (including the armor
volume rule) with the text format from Vehicles Lite. The Traveller
rules affect the background and design choices, but not the technology
of the vehicles.

Next Week: A freight train.
