I can monitor the sound of my Booksense recordings through headphones 
while the recording is in pause mode. I press and hold the record 
button to start the recording and at some point in the recording I 
pause it by tapping the record button. I can still hear whatthe 
recording would sound like even though the recorder is paused. tapping 
the record button  again resumes the recording. Hope this helps.
