You had better luck than I did! I kept losing my place, and getting end of side messages while listening to the books. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rod Gowen" <[email protected]>

Hi Russ,

I, as stated, am still using v1.0 and have listened to over 50 NLS books on it so far and can honestly say that I have never lost my bookmark or my place while reading, no lockups and no dropouts.

One of these was the 800 megabyte, 75 hour Big Book Of Pulps and others were very short.

I guess my biggest complaint, if I have one other than the pronounciation dictionary, is in regard to the low volume of the NLS books as compared to the volume of the book itself.

I do have one question for GW and HIMS though.
Why must we hear the TTS voice tell us the title of the book when it is fully loaded? After all, didn't we just hear the title before we pressed play?
It seems totally unnecessary.

In any case, I have had no problems with NLS books on this particular unit.

Rod

The 1.0 was unusable when it comes to listening to nls books. I don't use playlists. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rod Gowen" <[email protected]> To: "Terri Pannett" <[email protected]>; "Rich Ring" <[email protected]>; <[email protected]>

I bought my Book Sense standard the first day they were for sale and have been using it every day since, with very few problems!

I have not updated the original firmware, or, I should say that I have updated it (twice) and gone back to V1.0 each time. I went back because I want to use playlists and they did break that in the beta version.

As for reading NLS books, I have never lost a bookmark or had a book refuse to play nor have I ever lost my place in one of them.

I do not use audible, so cannot comment on that.

I read my newspaper from NFB Newsline each morning and these have given me no problem either.

I play a lot of books that I have ripped from CDs and converted to single files and have had no trouble with these to date.

The one area that I would have to say that I am disappointed in is with the TTS pronounciation dictionary.

Other than that, I will continue to enjoy my little unit and be waiting patiently for any fixes and new and exciting additions to the firmware that may be in the works and on the way.

I will say, that, if I were in Rich's position, and having as many problems as he talks about having, I would be on the phone getting an RMA and a new unit!

Rod

I very seldom have a problem keeping my place reading an NLS book. I hit the pause button and then I turn it off. I've never used bookmarks, so I can't comment on them. I don't use audible books, either.

The few times the BS didn't keep my place were my fault, not the BookSense.

Greetings all:
I received my Booksense at the NFB convention in early July. Until last Wednesday, November 11, I have used it exclusively for all of my reading needs. I love its form factor. I love its navigation structure. I love the fact that it has a clock. I love its text to speech voices. However, I have simply been too frustrated by other issues to continue using the device. I shall name them here. 1. The device will not keep its place in any NLS book. If I load an NLS book, navigate to a chapter heading, read for a few minutes and then subsequently close that book, when I open the book again, I am always taken back to the beginning of the book, and this is frustrating. Certainly, I can find my place, but this behavior should not be. 2. Suppose I am reading an NLS book, and I turn the device off. Now, I turn it back on, and press "play" to start listening to the book. What often happens is you get this incredible machine gun noise. You can correct the problem by changing the navigation level, but again, this should not be.
3. My Booksense will never save bookmarks.
4. My Booksense is not honoring headings in Audible books.
The reason I finally gave up on the unit is that I downloaded "Under the Dome" from Audible last week, and when the Booksense kept taking me back to the beginning of a part of the book, I'd simply had enough. I truly love this device, but until the firmware update is released, I will use the Stream, because it always holds my place, and it honors Audible headings. There is only so much frustration I can deal with, but I sincerely hope that these problems are addressed in the new firmware, and when that firmware is released, I'll update my machine as soon as I can. The trouble is, the Booksense used to keep its place in NLS books, why it no longer does is a mystery to me. I even reinstalled the firmware that came out in August, just to make sure. I have done more than one reset, even the reset where you depress the reset button and hold down the number 4 key. At this point in time, unless someone has a great need to use the device to read computer generated text, I cannot recommend this unit at all. I hope that with the next firmware update that I will be forced to change my mind.
Thank you all.
