I am not a long term blind user of adaptive products so will throw this out. Given the history of adaptive product development, what are the chances of the current trends changing towards affordable? I wont hold my breath.

I think its good that many blind people will step outside the box and make use of mainstream products. But there are still too many who need things like this braille note takers and I dont see that changing. Braille is what makes the connection to the world for the deafblind.

Thanks Jenifer,

I love my iPad! It continues to amaze me!

It sure feels like something is going to have to give or change in the adaptive tech world. RFB&D, NFB Newsline, Daisy, they all could have apps for the iProducts.

*Grin,* with all that said, I do enjoy my booksense. I'm going to miss the connection between gw and hims. Makes me wonder what are gw's plans in the future? How cool would it be, if window-eyes jumped into the touch screen market? There are window's based tablets out there. *smile*

I'm with you Traci! Would be way cool for GW-Micro... or anyone... to make an ap for the iProducts that would work with Daisy... but that would totally defeat the purpose of the Booksense... right now... NLS books can only be played on specialized products. If an ap was made, that'd kick them light out of the market. No one would buy there expensive products if you could listen to a NLS or other Daisey book on a product that costs a few hundred dollars cheaper. But i like your way of thinking!

Wow, this thread has gone way off topic, but I have to chime in.

I would love to have a notetaker. I love the portability, the fimiliar braille input, and the braille display would be brilliant! A big however is, they are way too flippin' expensive. No way can I shell out $5000! And I'm still limited, no skype!?

I love the iProducts! It is much cheeper and gives me more freedom. For example, I can buy an 8gb iPod for what, $200 something? Then American Printing House has their braille input/display for $1600. There ya go! For under $2000, I have a amazing notetaker with braille display!

Hey, I'd like to add in a PS here. GW staff, with your tech brilliance, how about writing a daisy app for the iProducts? How flippin cool would that be!? Being able to listen to a nls book on the iPad or touch or phone? *smile*

Take care all,
Traci

Yes, I have jaws on my computer, but my computer has real keys on its keyboard. I've been typing since I was in the third grade, and in a pinch, I can type using a computer that doesn't have a screen reader. That is way different than a touch screen, at least in my opinion.

You said "The touch screen just doesn't make sense to me, and even with
speech, I don't consider it to be accessible."

Do you have a screen reader on your computer? If you do, then the above
comment is at oods with it.

I completely agree with you about touch screens. I've seen a friend's
iphone, and although he swears by the thing, I just didn't like it at all.
The touch screen just doesn't make sense to me, and even with speech, I
don't consider it to be accessible. Also, I don't like the speech used by the
apple products. If I could tolerate that speech, I'd still be using the
victor reader stream I used to have. I don't have a dedicated note taking device because I can't afford anything like that, but my desktop computer
meets all my needs quite nicely, and I'm very happy with my htcs743 cell
phone. It can serve as a notetaker in an emergency. I love my booksense,
though, and hope that I'll be able to enjoy using it for many years to come.

Many people get their notetakers through Rehab. Others get loans or grants.
The Ipods might be fine for some who can't afford notetakers, but Ipods
don't meet my needs and I don't think I would like touch screens, even if they are "accessible." Besides, Ipods have too many features I wouldn't even use! I don't know if a person has to have AT&T to use the Ipod, although I
know it's true for the Ipad and Iphone. Well, I'm happy with Verizon
Wireless and I won't switch to AT&T for any reason! I'll use my BSP as long
as I can.
