I guess I'll have to call myself so I can tell myself to update to the
latest driver. <smile>. As I reflect on this, here is something of how
the call would proceed.
Support: Good afternoon. This is Raul.
Caller: Hello, is this support?
Support: Well you did press 1 at our prompt for technical support, did
you not?
Caller: Well yes, but I wanted to be sure. What did you say your name
was again?
Support: My name is Raul. How can I help you?
Caller: Did you say Rollo?
Support: No, I said Raul. You can pronounce it Raw Ool.
Caller: OK Paul, that is great. Can you help me? I am having a problem
editing in notepad. Characters ding when I arrow over them.
Support: Which version of Windows are you running?
Caller: I have 7.0. I just got it in the mail 2 days ago.
Support. Not Window-Eyes. What version of Windows are you running? As in
XP, Vista, 2000? ETC.
Caller: Oh sorry. I have Vista.
Support: Have you updated to the latest video drivers?
Caller: Yes, I used Microsoft's Windows update earlier today and got the
newest ones. They have a date of April 1, 2007
Support: No, that does not work most of the time. You need to go to the
actual manufacturer's web site to get the latest ones.
Caller: OK, but I thought you guys at GW say that it don't matter which
video card you use.
Support: That is correct. However old drivers, buggy drivers, and
sometimes Microsoft drivers don't cut it for the best experience.
Caller: OK. I'll get the latest drivers. And if that don't fix it, what
then?
Support: If that does not work, you might have a bad card or you might
have to reinstall Windows. It's not the best thing, but Vista sometimes
has bad video issues in general and so this is why sometimes video
issues are worse in Vista than in XP.
Caller: That seems a bit extreme.
Support: I realize this, and I wish I had a better answer. Another
solution you can try is sending us the machine so we can put some debug
code on it and see if Window-Eyes is the cause of the problems.
Caller: I can't be without my machine. It's the only one I have and I
would go through withdrawals and I need to pay my bills because I do all
my Internet banking on it.
Support: I can definitely understand because I do the same thing.
Caller: OK Robert, many thanks and I'll keep you updated with my findings.
Support: Great! And I hope the only issue is getting a newer driver.
Please let us know if we can help further. Thanks for calling.
Click.

You know, a Flickering Screen would mean a lot of things, Bad card, or out
of date driver. And same apply to Angelo problem. About 50 percent of
times it's a driver issue, and a lot of people don't go out and get the
latest drivers, in that case, with Vista, It don't go get the latest driver
for Nvida as I've updated the video card driver almost twice a month for the
past year.
And, I'm sure if they call into GW, that would be one of the first question
asked, have you updated your Video, and Sound driver? *grin*
Matt.

Hello Jamie. I can believe that Angelo is having editing problems. My
own home machine which runs Vista home premium has problems with edit
boxes. Yes folks, a GW Micro employee's personal computer has problems.
When I run Window-Eyes on this machine I'm talking about, I lose
characters when I'm in edit boxes such as notepad. I've updated my video
card drivers, I've uninstall ed and reinstalled my video drivers, I've
disabled all the advanced features of my video card and yet...I still
have issues on that one machine. On another machine with the same video
card, and still running Vista, but Ultimate instead, I have no such
editing troubles. This to me would seem to indicate that the video card
is not the culprit. What is it? I just don't know. I can almost
guarantee that if I either reinstall Vista or simply get another video
card, my troubles will be fixed? Why? For the simple reason that
sometimes there are issues with Vista and its graphics. My sighted wife
complains that our home Vista machine sometimes flickers badly. So, it's
probably a bad card, or it's just installed wrong as far as Vista is
concerned and nothing short of a complete reinstall will fix it. So what
do I do? As much as I hate to admit it, I don't use edit boxes much on
that PC. Luckily I have a laptop, and another pc to fall back on, but
it's still annoying? What does all of this have to do with the price of
rice in China? Well, had I brought my pc to GW Micro's office, my place
of employment, or something, perhaps we would know once and for all if
it was my machine, or if it was Window-Eyes. Since the problems are not
life threatening, and I'm lazy, I have not done so and therefore have no
reason to complain.
Many thanks.

If the web is your beef, why not use SA To Go. It's free. Just curious as
to
what sort of editing problems you're having?

Hi Mike, for me 5.5 was the last good working version of we. 6.0 and
6.1 introduced many problems on the web, and many editing problems
in all Microsoft products. I guess just not so very happy with we any
more, with the 150 upgrade cost of 6.0/6.1 and the cost of this 1 for
a product that just isn't very good and now not so stable anymore I
can't justify it Angelo

Angelo
Well, I can understand the hessitancy with 7.0 given numerous
comments, but why go back to 5.5.
And, as for 7.0, it seems that clean installs and updated scripts
have reduced the number of problems reported.
7.0 will work fine for 99.999% of users in the near term.
My relationship with God begins with trust.
It also continues in trust.
