Hi Kathy,
Braille displays come in all shapes and sizes. They range from 12
sells at the smallest to 80 sells at the largest. There are displays
that fit in your pocket, and displays that practicly need their own
table. They connect using the usb that your familiar with, old serial
ports, and now wirelessly through bluetooth, but not all displays have
all options. They range in functionality from something like the sync
braille, which has very little, but is easy to learn, to something
like the braille sense where acting as a braille display is only a
small part of what the machine does. Some displays only allow you to
read back text, while others also allow you to key in text using a
braille keybord. Even the feel of the braille sells is different from
display to display.
I must say, I like the recomendation of the baum/human ware lines,
which are called brailliant and braille connect. Unfortunately I and
at least one other person have reported issues with them on window-
eyes 7 and have gotten no response. That doesn't mean no one is
listening to us of course, but it's not really very encouraging either
when making a recomendation on where to put four to eight grand down
on hardware.
I'm also impressed with the braille sense, although as more of a
braille display than a notetaker which is really it's intended purpose.
If you want to drop me a note and give me a better idea what you'll be
using it for, I might make some recomendations, but honestly you need
to get a look at some of the hardware yourself and decide what meets
your feature and comfort needs.
Best,
