With WLM and WE 7.01, you do not need to TAB back and
forth. incoming messages are read automatically. You can hit F6 to
go to the history window if you want to read the entire conversation history.

If you maximize the screen whilst you are talking to someone that
will help. Also make sure you turn off the tool bars which appear
above the message box you enter your text. Use shift and shift tab
to navigate to reading the message from the other person. Use tab

I think you mean that you want to hear if someone logs into umm
messenger. Not sure if WE does that will have to ask hearing people
