What I realized last night as that I didn't have the set files installed for office 2007. For some reason hen I installed the set files, the up and down arrows in the message list didn't read either. When I looked at it this morning, it did. So that part of my issue is solved.
What I really don't like about 2007 is that when you open a message it doesn't read automatically and I need to arrow down, or use the control shift r command to read. In my older version of 2003, it would read automatically, I could use the up page an down page, but that doesn't work in 07 either. At least I haven't found a way to make it work. 07 is very different in my opinion, not sure I am happy with the change, but will give it time. Are you running under xp or vista? What I was seeing is that using the up/down arrows in the list of messages says "no selected item", yet using the mouse cursor shows the messages are there on the screen, and pressing the enter key will open one up for reading. Can you say if all of this is true for you? thanks.
