Hi Darren,

I have to disagree with all of that.

First, many people do like Vista fine, they just don't like paying for
the upgrade to it, so a modest amount of Vista upgrades sold.

Next, they aren't scrapping it, they're just continuing to come out with
newer versions of Windows. Just as Vista is a beefed up XP, Windows 7
is just a beefed up Vista.

As for why people like Vista:

* it has better anti-virus/spyware security
* it has voice recognition
* it has flashy UI windows presentation
* It has a really nice way of handling the combination of start menu and
windows file search. This may be it's best liked feature. If, for
instance, you know you've got a menu choice for an image editor
somewhere, but you can't remember the company who makes it, and the menu
choice for it is under a menu named for the company, then in XP you've
got a problem. You've got to check out every unfamiliar menu group
under the programs menu until you see the link for the image editor.

In Vista, you just start to type the name of the image editor, and vista
instantly brings up a menu of links, including those from the programs
menu, but also your favorites in case what you remember is that you
bookmarked it but didn't yet download and install it. It's wonderful
not having to hunt for things any more. Even a recently editted Word
document or downloaded file works like this; not sure where you put it?
just start typing in it's name and vista will show you every possible
file.
* it now allows you to manipulate the volume separately for each sound
source. want your screen reader to be louder than the cd player, no
problem.
* it allows a panel of gadgets on the desktop. This is mostly a sighted
person benefit, like the fancy window display, and both can be turned
off to save processor if you like.
* it has improved networking features, especially for wireless networks.
* you can upgrade to a different version of windows or vista from vista
itself; it will download what it needs and change your license, a lot
like the script updates for window eyes.
* I'm told by GW that it handles interfacing with video drivers much
better, so there's no chance of a conflict with multiple screen readers
being installed, as there is with xp.

These are just the few I can think of. There's plenty of reason to want
vista, and because it does more, especially the anti-virus protection,
it takes more processor/memory.
