This is a fraction symbol. You can change the behavior of these things
from tools/auto correct options. There is a tab called auto correct as
you type which contains a list of things which get auto-changed. Things
like quotes/smart quotes, regular/graphical hyphens, and
regular/graphical fractions. This is how it's done with Word 2003. The
older Word 2000 may be different so I hope this can point you in the
right direction.

When I look for the number 4 in the text, it’s not there, so it’s an
invisible number that MSWord is unhelpfully putting in. It is
confusing. How do I turn off this numeric-list-creation thing that
MSWord is doing?
