Google does employ ajax for returning suggestions although I must say
I seldom experience that problem when I'm off on one of my rambles in
googleshire.

If I had to wager a guess, I'd say what's happening is the same problem
you'll have when you try to type something in the search box of google's
main page. That is, the thing is trying to suggest what it thinks you
might be searching for as you type. If it's google powered I'd
especially bet on this. I know in google you can switch off that suggest
feature. I use the search bar now so it doesn't matter, but that's how
you fix it if you are going to use the page to do the search. Maybe the
pages you're doing search from have a similar option?
