Hi Walt, I also use the six cell battery, and I keep forgetting to turn off the screen with function f6. I turned off the mouse pad in control pannel so I never have to worry about the mouse pad getting in my way. I do not have a problem with shift tab, maybe you have a keyboard problem. I'll have to see how much battery life increases when I turn off the screen.
