Even not having the latest updates, for Windows, might cause some of your 'freezing up' troubles. Besides, you won't have the security updates, either, putting your system at risk.

Go ahead, don't install the GA, but you will be exposed to security issues (could even be more malicious than the 'knowledge gathering' you are afraid of, which may not even be ralistic), you won't receive the newest updates, and you WILL NOT get rid of the reminder, to install it.

The GA is there, to ensure that your Windows is a legal copy. It will check certain things about your stystem, and verify that this is in accordance with teh database Microsoft already has on your actual installation. Many software manufacturers nwaday uses this technology, to make sure, of preventing piracy. Compare it to the license plate on your car. You could dismount it, and your car will still be running. But you might not be getting anything if the car is stolen, you might have trouble in certain situations with the police, and most truely, noone would think your car is legal, inviting thieves to do what they want. The license plate is there for a reason; the GA is there for a reason. No you don't HAVE TO install it, but what are the benefits? What are the gains and losses? I agree, we don't have to install EVERYTHING that we are invited to put on our loaded systems. And some of it is mere personal/private information collection. Many manufacturers and webpages, tell you to leave a ton of unnecessary info, or ask you to run a certain ActiveX or small piece of software, apparently to give you certain benefits. Your being causious, is a good thing; hence, keep on being. But sometimes, the stuff you are asked to instqall or the info you are told to enter, is necessary for a good reason; i.e the license plate on a car, the key for your front-door, your social insurance number (on your health card, by all means not on any webpage), and, in this instance, the GA on your PC. Would you have left your front door unlocked in the night, simply because you didn't want to leave the thieves the JJOY of breaking in; rather letting them walk right in?

Hope this helps, letting you make an informed decision.

Hi,

You are right. If you don't install GA, it is foolish, as Microsoft update
uses it to get the latest updates.

All the best

Steve

Pat, The geunine advantage does not give microsoft the knoledge what is on
your computer.
I run windows and have the wga in stalled and all it does is varifies that
windows is genuine and allows you to get downloads that need varifaction.
This helps you cause when you varify your copy of windows this means you can

be asured that you will be getting the best that microsoft will offer.

Dear David, and Everyone,

Thanks a bunch for this info.

I'm going to get rid of all my scripts, and start fresh, after I make
sure my computer is working fine without scripts, then I'll
re-install the scripts one by one, starting with the GW ToolKit.

I don't have time to do this right now.

I ended up rebooting my computer twice this morning, and I sent two
error messages to GW Micro.

Someone told me I had to install the System Genuine Advantage, and
that is not true. I'm not letting Microsoft have the knowledge of
everything that is on my computer.

Thanks a bunch.

First of all, make sure that you have the latest version of GWToolkit.

I have noticed the behavior of WE freezing at the startup,
frequently. In many cases, it is because it needs to, or even are in
the process of, updating the GWToolkit script. If you update any of
the other scripts, first, and they rely on the GWToolkit, it seems
things are bound to hang. The staff tells that there has been taken
steps - in WE7.1 - to fix the script update problem. We all are
waiting for that... :)

If you are in a position, where you have the chance, try to reboot
your computer with the net cable (for the internet) unpluged. Doing
this, WE will not try to update any scripts, and your machine might
start troublefree. First speech is up and running, plug your
internet cable again. If this works, it is a matter of the updating
routines, for the scripts. If not, you might have other things on
your system, causing the problem. If it is the script updating,
though, my suggestion is to go through all your scripts installed,
and under the help menu, you will find the settings for when the
updates should take place. Simply turn it off, by setting it to
NEVER. Then download and install the INSTALL PAcKAgES script, and
use that one, for manually updating all your scripts - maybe once a
week. Just make sure, always to update the GWToolkit, and the HOMER
script first, as many of the other scripts (that is more or less all
of them), are relying on one, or both, of these.

Hope this is of help, to anyone,

Subject: Window-Eyes Freezing on startup

Dear GW Micro Staff, and Everyone,

Hi, Quite often, Window-Eyes freezes on startup. This has been
happening for a long time. This morning, I had to reboot my
computer, as I had no speech. I did the End-Task, and that didn't
work, either. Then I remembered, after rebooting, when this
happened again, that I could do a control-backslash, and alt-f4,
and shut down Window-Eyes, and reload it, again. I did this, and
Window-Eyes was talking again, and I got the error reporting thing
for the second time this morning. I closed the task manager window,
and I sent the error report with no comments.

Also, my scripts are trying to update older scripts, dated from May
6th. This also has been happening since February.

What do you recommend that I try? <smile>

Thanks much.

Pat Ferguson always loving Window-Eyes
