ok; it's possible that Vista is playing some part, as the only pc I have with IE8 is a Vista pc.
I did just remove the IE max script, which has caused me problems on IE 7, and I should have known to look for it and remove it right away; I didn't realize it was there, and that helps somewhat. I'm going to try running with no scripts to see if all problems go away then. thanks.
