Cookie cuter systems like dells and gateways are for people who want it all in a one size fits all config, and usually less technical people who aren't confortable with installing os, or configuring things themselves or don't want to hassle with making choices which dell or said company makes for you which work for lots of people.

I personally have always opted to do custom machines, because if something goes bad, you can get an off the shelf part and aren't stuck with a dell power supply, or motherboard or whatever.

The machines I get are usually higher performance machines where corners aren't cut in the way of memory, video sub-systems, or memory slots and such.

On these machines you can usually find more expansion slots, accomodation for legacy hard-ware, such as com ports, and floppy controlers on the motherboard, and of course you don't have to put up with the extra junk dell will install the bloat ware factor.

I also like installing my own os and making my own tweaks whenever possible or if I do let a shop do it, they'll do it to my specs.

Dell couldn't even format my drives fat32 for me when I asked them to do so in 04 when I actually considered working on a dell.

I like fat32 because it's easier to get to images for backing up and such and if I need ntfs I reserve an extra partition on one of my drives for big files and such.

I know I can run ntfs pro but that takes more memory, and for those of us who use older technology as well as newer technology to maintain complete control of our systems and to run multiple os's this makes sense.

Also on a fat32 system, it's much easier to get your data back if the drive messes up.

I realize this probably won't be an option for window's 7 but as long as I can use it, I will.

Also, have any of you actually taken a look inside a dell case?

Man, talk about junky.

Drives mounted vertically in these funny little cages with little catch cages, and brackets, they're a pain to get open and work on, where as my machine has nice drive bays and rails you just screw to, no gimicky plastic junk just waiting to crack and hard to get to screws and junk.

I've gotten too many of these junky dells through my work bench over the last 5 years, and rresurrected them, and every time I go man, for what they want for these junky machines, people are getting ripped off.

But they serve a purpose I guess, I'm just glad I had good buddies and the plain stubbornness to learn to work on these a little myself.

In my opinion you made several mistakes.
First, getting a Dell.
Second, getting conned into the extra warranty.
This is a cheap machine and will be disposable in two years or less but you are paying for a four year warranty.
Integrated video and sound.
Not a good idea in my opinion, cheap video and sound cards are available which will make your system more reliable and slightly faster.
Add them yourself if you like.
Only one hard drive?
And, paying for a quad core processor which adds next to nothing over a core two duo except cost.
Also, why buy a monitor from Dell?
They are around cheap from buy.com etc.
