We really have come a long way with speech.
I started using speech with the Apple II e and the Echo II speech
synthesizer.
Here is a bit of trivia for you.
With the Echo II on the Apple II e computer, how would this be
pronounced as a word?
G h o t i
Of course our modern speech says
Ghoti
What do you think the Echo II said?

I wonder if the degree that one notices and is bothered by the
mis-pronunciations is not a reflection of how long one has used speech
and
how many different forms of speech one has had to use over the year. I
find
that my ear and/or brain compensate for things like the pronunciation of

October and I would have never noticed it if it weren't brought to my
attention. Even now, I hear the correct pronunciation unless I'm
listening
for the flaw. I started hearing artificial speech back when votrax and
echo
were in common use.
I'm all in favor of having the best speech possible, but at some point
the
errors may cost more to fix than they are worth. I find that no matter
which synthesizer I'm using, there are things that are done very well
and
things that are not. I even had one form of speech that was great for
reading news articles but would drive me up a wall when reading a story.
Anyway, back to where I started, I wonder if one doesn't become more
desensitized to mis-pronunciations the more one has to deal with them.
