My experience withgovernment and maybe even private nonprofit
agencies is either they haven't experimented with window-eyes to see if it
will work or it won't work on State systems like CIDOR in California. So
those of us who preferred window-eyes are forced to use JFW or do without
employment.
And, I have had some cases where window-eyes wouldn't fill in forms or at
least not without using special keys. When I finished my internship I had
to fill in an adobe severance form. I couldn't do it in window-eyes though
I truly tried. When I mailed it to my work mailbox I thought this won't
work in Jaws either but I'll just try but it did. I filled out the form
easily.
Also the IRS site has forms especially adapted to JAWS. It's harder to fill
those in using window-eyes.
I am glad to say window-eyes is catching up and in some respects is superior
but I long for the day when it does everything Jaws does because it is a
more affordable product for the 70% unemployed especially those who don't
have a VR counselor willing to flip the tab.
Maybe when Meg Whitman becomes governor GW can initiate a dialogue with her
explaining that one way CA could save money is to switch to window-eyes. We
have a real budget crisis here. Maybe someone could experiment with CIDOR
although the CA system is changing shortly.
However GW needs friends in the CA legislature and they need the organized
blind to push for equal access for screen readers in government. The people
in power, the blind ones are for the most part Jaws users and they won't
push for these type of changes. They say "Just deal with it."
Thus I use window-eyes at home and assuming I work for the State or federal
Government Jaws at work and probably more at home so I can learn it better.
I used jaws in the 90's because that's what they trained us on at school but
even jaws has progressed since I used it back then.
If you use computers at the one stop centers my experience has been though
outdated they also use Jaws.
I think internationally window-eyes and jaws are more evenly matched. Now we
have to persuade the old guard who grew up using jaws that window-eyes is at
least as good if not better.

I agree. I was a staunch JFW user until about three years ago when I
discovered that te latest version of JFW wouldn't read PDF documents
correctly without some modification to a setting in Adobe Acrobat or even
JFW itself. I need hardly point out that when I discovered that Window-Eyes
reads them correctly right out of the box the decision to switch was easy.
And since GW offers two payment plans it was easy for me to buy it despite
being unemployed. So the fact that the Commission for the Blind wouldn't
pay for it didn't matter. Needless to say though Browse Mode gets refreshed
a lot on sites like Youtube and though this is slightly inconvenient I'm
more than willing to wait for the problem to be fixed if such a solution
can be found. I like that GW doesn't rush their updates the way other
companies seem to. I've had folks tell me that the reason they rush is
because they have more customers, but I can't help wondering if that would
continue to be treu if the schools and agencies who have contracts with the
competition actually informed their clients that there were indeed other
options available.
We are the Knights who say...Ni!

Raul my sympathies go out to you and the rest of the GW staff as well.
Window Eyes isn't perfect but it is sure excelent and Window Eyes
offers more value and more enhancements compared to other screen
readers. One of these enhancements is Script Central. If browse mode
is bothering people so much can't they write a script for it until GW
comes out with a new update? Honestly in my experience Window Eyes has
been the best screen reader I've ever used. I just wish more schools
and companies would use it rather than the competition. Thanks for
doing the great work you are doing.

Hello all, quite honestly I sometimes wish nothing was ever said about
rewriting browse mode. Why? Because it's frustrating when every time
there
is a problem with an application which uses browse mode doesn't work
quite
right, we get beaten over the head with that statement. This is a
perfect
example why some companies choose to never let on what is coming in
next
releases. Not only that, but when browse mode rewriting was mentioned,
we
didn't know what all other programs and other things would need our
attention. How thoughtless of us to try and keep Window-Eyes stable and
up-to-date in other areas. I personally like that we keep our customers
informed about what is going on, but at the same time, this has a
double-edge in that it comes back to bite us when we don't deliver the
day
it's mentioned either.
Many thanks.

It is coming up on two years since GW has had a major release of WE.
It is long over due for the new browse mode which I hope fixes such

It is sure not getting any better. GwMicro needs to fix their own
problems. How is it that NVDA is free and works better with firefox? I
am not sure what are we paying all that money for? If this keeps up I
will think about switching to System Access. Serotek listens to their
customers needs and improves the product.
Thank You
