The reason you can't get to them, is that they aren't really there in the text. they are being displayed or printed, but they aren't in the document; sort of the way underlining isn't in the text either, it's just that Word has a notation to itself: "this bit is underlined.". well, these numbered paragraphs are the same way, Word has a similar note to itself they should have a counting number displayed in front of them.
Robin's given you the way to turn it off, but I thought it would help to know why you can't get to things you can sometimes see in Word.
