Work at a hospital and they have classified my machine as a medical device
to minimize  some of the pushed software.

I agree with Heidi. I would suspect that a system that old just doesn't have
the resources to run your software plus all the stuff that the network
pushes onto the client machines.  I know that around here, they generally
replace PC's about every two years.

The computer is running XP Pro SP3, but it is about six years old.  I guess
I really don't know enough about what is running in the background to answer
that question, but part of the time, it runs just fine-but at other times,
it just crawls!

How old is your computer and is there other encryption type software on
there?

 

I work for the feds, and often times between the server and security stuff
that runs in the background the response time is less than desirable.  

 

For instance I had a laptop from work, that I use at home or when I am on
the road that has some much security software on it, that it can take 10
minutes or more to boot up.  I just gave back a 2 year old  laptop that was
so slow as almost to render it useless.  The specks were fine, but the way
it processed the inscription really slowed it down and it wasn't very old.
They gave me a new lap top, the specs are not as good as the one I returned,
but it is running so much better.

 

If your computer is older than a couple of years, from this non technical
person, might want to try another computer or a laptop to help determine
where the problem might be.

Chip, thanks for your comments.

Something else that I didn't mention is that the part of the network I am on
is wireless, but the hub is right outside of my office.

 

Maybe, from your comments, I am wrong about the cause being the network.

Sometimes just typing in Word 2007 becomes very very slow.  I wouldn't think
this would require any interaction with the network until the file is saved.
Do you think that this could be more from firewall settings, or perhaps
behind the scenes updating of software?

 At times the computer seems to be just fine, and at others, it will slow to
a crawl, and the fan will crank up to high speed for a while, which I think
means that the CPU is getting a heavy workout.

Any additional comments welcomed.

Hi Jeff,

 

the first question is, why do you think your slowdowns are related to the
network?  in particular, I'm asking, do they only happen when you're
accessing a network resource such as a file on a server, or a network
printer, or even the internet?  Are you fine otherwise?  that would be
pretty strong evidence that it's the network, but if that's not the case,
then maybe it's something closer to home (something about your pcs).

 

If it's really the network, and your pcs are ok otherwise, this is tough to
track down.  it could be the quality of your cabling for instance;
especially if it was put in say more than 10 years ago; it might be poorly
shielded, and have relatively few twists or poor connectors, or maybe
someone not expert just ran it right against noisey electrical devices such
as flourescent lights.

 

So, maybe you could ask for one good quality new cable to be run from a
troublesome pc to the wiring hub if you think you've got old cable, which
may be running slow.  then, see if this run helps a pc perform much better.

 

Even new cable can be running slow if someone has configured the speed to be
a specific speed, rather than letting it automatically determine the highest
speed the connection will tollerate.  this would mean your IT department may
have messed things up, and this is hard for you to prove.

 

If the wiring is ok, how about your particular wiring hub for your area?  Is
it very old, or perhaps misconfigured, or perhaps overloaded, so the people
in your location suffer more than others in your corporation?

 

Really, this isn't an area where an end user like you and your boss can
effectively suggest anything useful.  once you've shown them

that the network is definitely the major problem (if that's the case), then
you've done about all that you can.  it might help if you can relocate a
troublesome pc to somewhere else in your company, and show how much better
it operates in some different location.  this will help your case for there
being something wrong with the network/wiring near your normal work
location.

I am using Window-Eyes 7.2 on a network at work.  Our network, I would say,
is a poor one, and is overloaded.

Sometimes, many of our computers with speech users get so slow that we can't
even type for a time.

 

I am in a position to suggest changes to our network which could help speech
users specifically, and the whole organization in general.

Besides spending a lot of money, could somebody send along some suggestions
which the Boss and I can understand, and the boss can instruct the IT folks
to put in place!
