At work I am also using  Lotus notes v8.5. 
The shortcut for Notes will start the notes8.exe to start Lotus notes,
this is a nicer client for sighted people.
Insteat of notes8.exe, use the nlnotes.exe from the same folder. 
I thought notes8.exe is the java client. Nlnotes.exe is not and works
better for me. 
Don't know if you was using that function, but to jump to the bookmark
list, to open quickly other databases, you could use alt-u in notes6 and
alt-b in notes8, but not with the notes8.exe client, only with
nlnotes.exe. 
In file/preferences, you can define different access options.
