I also just got an HP desktop and have the same problem.  I tried to uninstall 
some HP programs and there was an 
error due to a missing uninstall file or something.  Therefore, I went into 
MSCONFIG and unchecked the HP Advisor so 
that it would at least not run at startup.  I have had a similar problem with 
ASUS software on a Netbook and also on a 
Samsung Netbook as well, and it is frustrating.

Should I just get rid of all of the HP programs such as HP Advisor, HP Support
