In my opinion, the Vocal-eyes layout works best in that situation as
well as a situation where you have a num pad.
With the VE layout you can do all you need to do without moving over
to the num pad or doing hand-twister with a function key plus an insert key.
I realize the VE layout has fallen out of fashion as it's no longer
the default and thus people don't usually learn it.
Perhaps the learning curve for the default layout is flatter but I
believe it does a disservice to the user.

Really, this is so when others speak of specific keystrokes, I can follow
what they're meaning is; and with a little practice, I don't have any
trouble making the combinations. Also, I can look things up in the manual,

You can downloads the remapcapslock utility, and it will cause capslock to
act as an additional insert key, making this option even better (though for
some odd reason capslock doesn't always work in all situations).
