I think that I paid $24 for the 2 GB RAM module for my Asus. I also
have a 4 year old Dell Inspiron notebook, but bought the netbook because
it is 2 pounds lighter, and fits right into my messenger bag that I use
for work, conferences, etc.

Subject: Re: WE and Netbooks

Hi,

I am using a Netbook with Windows 7 starter and WE with 2GB of RAM and
am pretty happy with it. I have not really had any particular
frustrations with
Windows 7 Starter. If you have trouble with it, though, it is pretty
easy to upgrade as all versions are available on a Windows 7 computer
with it being a
matter of authorizing different features. I do sometimes find Microsoft
Word to be a little sluggish on my netbook, but it certainly can be
used. Also, the
smaller screens make battery life very nice. However, if you look at
the price of a Netbook plus the price of 2GB of memory, It is probably
at least worth
looking at what a low-end laptop would cost. Most netbooks that I am
aware of will not allow you to just add 1GB, you have to replace a 1GB
module with
a 2GB module so it may cost you $80 plus something more if you need it
installed. Unfortunately, low-end laptops often have large screens and
battery life is
poor. However, if you find that you really do need more than Windows
Starter so you are looking at upgrading Windows plus adding memory,
checking into
a laptop that already has the memory and the version of Windows you want
might make sense. For whatever reason, I don't feel that my Asus
Netbook with
2GB of memory and Windows 7 Starter is as responsive as my 4-year-old
Dell Inspiron laptop with 512MB of memory under XP. I don't know why,
though,
as I have also read that Windows 7 is optimized more for Netbooks. My
experience is also that a Samsung Netbook that my wife has with 2GB of
memory
and XP also does not seem to be as responsive as my old laptop, so I
don't think that my observations are really a reflection on Windows 7
but more
something with netbooks. Anyway, I hope that this is helpful and
doesn't just confuse the issue.

Best regards,

Steve Jacobson

a bit on how well it will work on Netbooks. I have been browsing a bit
here
locally, and almost all the netbooks available, only comes with 1gb of
ram. With the new ones, comes Windows 7, and it seems to be quite
popular with the
starter edition. I don't know why, but that is what most of the local
netshops offer. How well would WinEyes tie in with such a unit. 1gb
sounds rather low to
me, even under XP, where I am today. And experience gives me the feeling
the newer Win7 OS won't be less agressive on the RAM. Am I right in that
one?
Or, has there been a positive development in the combination of the
newest OS and newest WE version, as to RAM usage? Little use in buying a
brand
new unit, only to realize it doesn't give enough efficiency due to lack
of RAM. So any feedback will be great here. Oh yes, I do know, a netbook
never will
be anything but a secondary unit. I am just planning on using it for
some Emailing, browsing on the net, and also using it with Excel and
word. But I don't
want a unit that makes me eat my lunch for every single tiny operation
to be completed. Smile! Thanks for any inputs.
