Before personal computers were common,people did work on larger centralized computers and accessed those computers using terminals. These were devices with a keyboard and a TV-style screen or sometimes a printer. When personal computers took hold, it soon became common to have a personal computer use software to act like or "emulate" one of the old terminal types. Those of us who do work on larger computers still need to connect to those computers using our computers as terminals on the larger computers. There are also cases where one computer might be used as a terminal on another personal computer, especially when the second computer is running linux.
