My first attempt to do this was back in the 1980s (the DOS days). I typed correspondence using dictation. I had a headphone plugged into the dictation apparatus and one plugged into the back of my computer. Thus, I had access to the screen reader as well as the dictation material. I had no braille display. Later on, I used an automatic dialer which had its own headset. I found the sound card output in the back of my office computer and plugged an earphone into it. This time, I had access to the customers who were calling or being called and also to the screen reader. I was originally using a braille display only. I was using JAWS at the time, and thought I would try using the speech function as well. It helped me because I could access information quickly without having to move my hands from the PC keyboard. It sounds like a wireless headset with a braille display might be the best option today. Of course that will not be cheap. Again, good luck. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ted Larson" <[email protected]>

Subject: How Can I Best Talk On Phone And Use Screen Reader At Same Time

Dear List:
I am applying to various customer service jobs. What do I need to get so that I don't have to cradle the phone between shoulder and head while typing on the keyboard listening to both the screen reader and the person talking on the phone? And, would you describe the solution and tell me where I can get such devices to talk, listen and type for extended periods of time? Thanks for your ideas.
