I don't do call center work, but do spend a lot of time in phone meetings while
reading and writing with a screen reader. I use a wireless headset for the
phone and a very small in-the-ear earphone in the other ear connected to the
earphone jack of the computer. That earphone is small enough to fit under a
standard headset if you needed to wear a two-earpiece headset.

I found the small earphone, it's called a 1-Bud Pro, at Scansound. It's
comfortable and very small. The sound quality is good. It costs around $15.00.

By the way, I also use it with my Victor Reader because it combines stereo
output into one earphone.

If the employer doesn't already provide a telephone headset, try to get a
wireless headset. Our office purchased Senheiser Day Runner units. Just know
they're quite expensive. We found them at

Good luck.

Subject: How Can I Best Talk On Phone And Use Screen Reader At Same Time

Dear List:
I am applying to various customer service jobs. What do I need to get so that
I don't have to cradle the phone between shoulder and head while typing on the
keyboard listening to both the screen reader and the person talking on the
phone? And, would you describe the solution and tell me where I can get such
devices to talk, listen and type for extended periods of time? Thanks for your
ideas. Regards: Ted Larson
