Not all system trays are the same. My speakers were at the top of my list.

press insert s to bring the system tray up, press the end key to go to
the last item in that list. then press tab once and press enter. wait
a couple seconds, then press the home key to make sure that the volume
is all the way up to 100 percent. press tab once and press the space
bar. you should be on the mute and un mute button. I did this using
windows 7 64 bit.
