what ever happen to the idea of a script to do this for us? anybody jump on
that? I wish I could write scripts because this is one that I would be
working on lol.

Try this:
This is what works on my desktop.
Press Windows key and R.
Type in SNDVOL
This will open the volume mixer.
Up arrow a couple of times. (This is just in case your sound is turned
down instead of being muted.)
Tab once and press enter on the mute/unmute toggle.
To test, you should be able to shift tab and up arrow and hear a ding each
time you increase the level of the sound.
