Aloha,
I'd run narrator first.  If narrator speaks, than the problem is with WE7.5.

Now, with your wife's help, press control backspace
alt h
s
arrow down once and enter
now verify that you have decktalk or Eloquence selected then tab twice and verify that you have default sound card selected and press enter.
If still no sound, Then in windows 7 press window key and type sound
and arrow down until you hear change sound card
enter
in sound playback tab
press alt c
then tab and enter on test and follow the prompts.
If you still have no sound.
press window key
type
device manager and enter
tab once
press s
you should be on sound
arrow right
and you should hear your sound card.
if not arrow down or up until you hear your sound card.
now delete your sound card.
now reboot your computer and cross your fingers.
