HI,
I agree here. Let say that gw icro creates an app for dragon naturally
speaking. A app I would be willing to pay for lets say about 75 bucks. Now
that app works well with dragon naturally speaking. Hours of work go in to
that app. Not all the window-eyes users are going to need this app so the
cost of creating the app should not be past on to all the users of
window-eyes threw an sma. So they charge for the app, and thoughs who want
it buy it and those who have no use for it don't.
Lets say another app that is created allows for braille keyboard input using
s d f for one to and three jkl for four five and six. It allows you to type
in braille on your computer keyboard. Now some of us are going to want this
app. Some of us are just fine typing on the keyboard. Once again gw micro
could charge lets say 50 bucks for this app. So those of us who want this
ability buy the app, and those of us who have no use for it don't.
When should gw micro charge for an app and when should it be free. Well I
think that would be dependend on what the app does how long it takes to
create the app and how much it costs gw micro to get the software the app is
being created for.
So lets take the case of dragon. Gw micro would have to buy a copy of
dragon naturally speaking. They would have to make sure the whole program
is accessible training etc. then they would need to test it. They would
also need to make all the window-eyes commands voice inabled. So after all
that is said and done they spent money and man power hours witch is also
spending money so they need to recover the cost of working on the app.
In the case of the braille app used in the example they have to code the
app. Test the app. Make sure there are no trainslation errors at some
point make it work with other langwiges and that takes time and man power.
So once again charging for such an app makes scence.

What apps should be free. Well any app created buy gw micro that provides
better access to things window-eyes should already work with. For example
lets say gw micro creates an app to provide better access to the problems
and action center. Well that is part of the operating system and
window-eyes should already work with that anyway so if an app is needed then
it should be provided free of charge because it is simply making window-eyes
work better with what it is sapozed to support already.
So in short if it is going to interest the users as a whole then it should
be free as part of the window-eyes upgraid. If it is only of interest to a
small group and is going to take time and a lot of effert to create then
charging makes scence.
Just my thoughts on the subject.

Because until companies make their software accessible, out of the box, it
takes lots of work to get some of them working.
Plus I don't think a screen reader company has the resources to make all
programs work with their product. It's not possible without lots of work.
It's not, GW Micro's fault that
everything doesn't work. Their job is to provide a screen reader that works
well with many types of the more popular or most used programs.
The microsoft products, for instance.
Anything else is really gravy.
We aren't entitled to get everything free. All this is just my opinion of
course and not intended to start a war. <grin> Bill
