Hi all,

Since we were recently discussing new laptops here, I thought I'd pass along
a very strong recommendation for Dell.

I've been happy with my Dell Inspiron, but I thought I'd look at something
else soon, as it's time to update.

Today though, I knocked the Dell off of the table onto the hardwood floor!
When I picked it up it was still running; the case has no cracks, the
display looks fine (according to a sighted person), and I can't find
anything wrong. Since it's not one of those laptops claiming any special
protection against drops or bumps, I was really surprised and impressed.

Just thought I'd pass this along for anyone else looking at laptops. I have
to say, years ago I purchased a thinkpad because it had a reputation for
being "tough"; and when it got a small "bump" it quit working and I had to
send it back.

Whatever laptop you are considering, one great thing to do is to go on
Amazon and find it, and read all the reviews from those who've purchased it.

Sorry to say Alan, the HP Pavilion DV7 you just purchased, had a lot of
unhappy reviewers. Someone here mentioned a blind person who couldn't get a
new HP laptop to work with their screen reader and had to return it, well,
the reviewers of this HP mentioned a known problem with the touchpad on HP
laptops causing the cursor to jump around on the screen even when your
wrists just brushed the case, and even after the person had made all the
adjustments recommended by HP. This would be terribly difficult for a blind
person, who may not even know the cursor was "jumping around".

As they say, "your milage may vary".

Bob,

Thanks for the Dell Inspiron update.

I thought GW had released enough scripting support to make WLM quite usable
(that was my understanding, I don't use it; I just wanted you to know there
were apps available to help it function better).

In any case, if you still don't like it even with the apps, I could try my
standard outlook pitch on you?

I really like outlook, not so much for it's email (which is good, but there
are plenty of good email clients), but because it does so much more:
calendaring, meetings, journals, tasks with reminders (and the ability to
assign tasks to others with outlook), contact management, it really does a
great deal. And because it's so popular, you can buy a whole raft of
add-ons (or get many free).

hth,

Chip

I have a new Dell Inspiron Model N5110 with an Intel I-5 processor.

I like it very much. It has a built in num-pad.

What I don't like is Windows 7 and Windows Live Mail.

I had a dell lap top before and it was great. Then I had a cheap HP and it
was cheap. You do get what you pay for.
